How to prepare
A short plan for this career fair, based on its format, audience and details.
Before the fair
- Research Onyx-Fire Protection Services Inc., Celestica and Ministry of Transportation before you go: what they do, which roles are open and one recent piece of news.
- Use a Canadian-format resume: no photo, no date of birth, and results written as short bullet points.
- Mark the employers on the list that hire for the roles you want. That is your route for the day.
- Prepare for on-site interviews: review common questions and have a short example ready for each of your key skills.
- Prepare a short way to explain your international experience in terms Canadian employers recognize, such as team size, budgets or results.
- Practise a 30-second introduction: who you are, what you do well and the kind of role you want next.
- Update your resume so the top third shows the roles and skills you want to talk about at this fair.
At the fair
- Arrive by 9:45 a.m., about 15 minutes before the start, when lines are short and employers are fresh.
- Open with your 30-second introduction, then ask what the team is hiring for right now.
- Dress as you would for an interview. Some employers may interview you on the spot.
- After each conversation, write down the person's name, the role you discussed and what to follow up on.
What to bring
- Printed copies of your resume, more than you expect to need (10 to 20 for a large fair).
- Copies of your licences, tickets and certifications.
- A charged phone with your LinkedIn profile or portfolio ready to show.
- A pen and a small notebook, or notes on your phone, to record names and next steps.
After the fair
- Send a short thank-you email within 24 hours to each person you spoke with, and mention something from your conversation.
- Apply online to the roles employers pointed you to, and mention that you met them at the fair.
- Connect on LinkedIn with a short note reminding them where you met.
