How to prepare
A short plan for this networking event, based on its format, audience and details.
Before the event
- Prepare one sentence that explains your international experience in terms people here recognize, such as team size, budgets or results.
- Prepare a 20-second introduction: what you do, what you are good at and what you would like to do next.
- Set a simple goal, such as three real conversations, so the evening has a purpose without feeling forced.
- Check how to get to 1095 Kingston Rd, where to park and how long the trip takes, so you arrive calm.
- Look up the organizer and any hosts or speakers, and note one or two people you would like to meet.
At the event
- Arrive early, while groups are small and it is easier to join a conversation.
- Ask people about their work before you mention your own search. Good questions lead to better conversations.
- Look for groups of three or more with room in the circle. They are easier to join than two people deep in conversation.
What to bring
- A few business cards, or a digital card or LinkedIn QR code ready on your phone.
- A charged phone with your LinkedIn profile or portfolio ready to show.
- A pen and a small notebook, or notes on your phone, to record names and next steps.
After the event
- Connect on LinkedIn within two days, with a note that says where you met and what you talked about.
- Follow up on anything you offered, such as an article or an introduction, within the week.
- Add each new contact to a simple list with the date and what you discussed, so you can check in again in a month or two.
- Look for the next networking event in Pickering and go back. People remember the faces they see more than once.
